AtmoSense

By Meier Clark

This curriculum, designed for seventh and eighth grade students, encourages an interdisciplinary approach to data analysis through research and observation of weather and weather prediction techniques. Named AtmoSense, the curriculum encourages thoughtful inquiry into global and historical weather tracking, computational thinking through engagement with GoGo Board components and coding interfaces, experimentation with classroom tools, and eventual data interpretation and analysis on both a local and larger level. By the end of the process, students will have completed independent research, designed and deployed their own GoGo Board-powered weather station, drawn conclusions from data from themselves and their peers, and had ownership over their own data collection project.

The curriculum and its inbuilt components are intentionally designed to introduce historical, cultural, and embodied study to a mathematics and science curriculum. Students will engage with questions of both qualitative and quantitative analysis, reflecting on their own experiences as valued observers and interpreters of the world. Ultimately, AtmoSense challenges students to develop their experimentation, observation, and synthesis skills within educational frameworks established within their state.
